The Challenge
David Weiss actively manages Baltimore Hebrew Congregation’s facilities using the Autani controls system. With a three-month payback on his investment, he ensures the system is used to its fullest to maximize energy savings.
The congregation spans 125,000 square feet, including a 1,000-seat synagogue, auditorium, gallery, and preschool. David relies on Autani’s metering and control features to maintain comfort while minimizing operating costs.
Active Management
Weekly event schedules guide David’s adjustments to heating and cooling. During winter, unoccupied zones remain at a cooler temperature while occupied areas warm in advance of events. In summer, cooling is disabled in unused spaces. Over time, data from the system has shown how far in advance to start conditioning each room.
This approach, combined with insights from Autani’s pulse counters and event logs, helps avoid demand peaks and saves money that supports the congregation’s mission.
Wireless Flexibility
Because the historic building cannot easily be rewired, David sought a wireless control solution. Autani devices were installed without disruptive wiring, and new sensors or controllers can be added quickly as needs evolve.
Outdoor lighting is scheduled for safety and security, with remote overrides when meetings run late. David also uses the system’s dashboards to monitor energy use and manage equipment from his desk.
The Results
Through careful use of Autani controls, Baltimore Hebrew Congregation dramatically reduced utility costs, achieving payback for design, purchase, and installation in just three months. Real-time feedback allows ongoing optimization and continued savings.
